PEOPLE
Simon & Schuster announced that Priscilla Painton, most recently Deputy Managing Editor of Time, starts as Editor-in-Chief in March. Michael Korda, who stepped down at the end of 2005, has been acting as Editor-in-Chief Emeritus. Separately, Associate Publisher Carl Raymond has left Simon Spotlight Entertainment following its move from Children’s to Pocket Books.

Charlie Nurnberg has left Sterling and may be reached at charlesnurnberg@hotmail.com. EVP and COO Marcus Leaver has been appointed President, and will take over as CEO. Jason Prince continues as Publisher.

Ingram Book Group announced that Jim Chandler is retiring and will be succeeded by COO Skip Prichard who joined the company in 2007. Joseph Reynolds has been named President of Ingram Library Services.

Bloomsbury USA Publishing Director Annik LaFarge is leaving the house as part of broader cutbacks. Approximately 8 people––10% of the group––has been laid off.

Harcourt’s Trade CEO Dan Farley (dfarley1@san.rr.com or 619-540-3533), Children’s Publisher Lori Benton, as well as HMCO’s Janet Silver have left the company.

Millicent Bennett, whose promotion to Editor at Ecco was just announced, is moving to Random House to work with Kate Medina and Susan Mercandetti. Meanwhile, Alison Stoltzfus has moved from HarperCollins to Crown as Associate Managing Editor for Reference and Value, replacing Trish Dublin who is handling project management for the Interactive Media Group.

In agency news, Anita Diggs has opened her own literary agency, Diggs McQuillar, focusing on adult fiction and nonfiction. . . . Jenni Ferrari-Adler has joined Brick House Literary Agents as an agent. She was previously at Sobel Weber. ... Susan Arellano, who was an agent at The Susan Rabiner Agency joined InkWell, as has Patricia Burke, who recently left Paramount. Prior to joining InkWell, Burke was Paramount’s VP of Literary Affairs in the studio’s New York office. Aimee Shieh will stay on at Paramount to run the office. . . . Matthew Elblonk has joined The Creative Culture as an agent. He was formerly at Collins Literary. Finally, Dana Bacher has joined the Stephanie Tade Agency as Agent and Subsidiary Rights Manager. She was formerly at Rodale.

Jeff DeBalko has been named President of Reed Publishing Group. Ron Shank, who was named VP Group Publisher of the publishing magazines, will report to him, while continuing to work directly with the heads of the different publications. “As part of the restructuring,” David Nudo has left PW as Publisher.

Changes at Baker & Taylor: Richard Willis resigned as chairman and CEO and was replaced by Jack Eugster, a member of the B&T board and former Chairman of Musicland. Arnie Wight, who was promoted to President last year, will continue to oversee the day-to-day operations. David Cully has joined B&T in the new position of EVP of Merchandising, reporting to Wight. Most recently, Cully was the CEO and co-founder of Blue Tulip, and he has held management positions at B&N, S&S, and others.

And some RH alums: John Groton has joined Globe Pequot as Executive Director, Trade and Special Sales. He was at RH for the last 17 years, most recently as VP, Client Development for RH Publisher Services. Jennifer Black has gone to GP from RH/Knopf as Senior National Account Manager reporting to Groton. They report to Michelle Lewy who has been promoted to SVP Director of Sales and New Product Development.

Meanwhile, George Fisher is retiring after 35 years in book publishing. Bill Huelster, Director of Proprietary Publishing is leaving and may be reached at 908-433-7095 or bhuelster@gmail.com. Marty McGrath also is leaving the company. David Naggar has gone to iAmplify.com.

Nancy Miller has also left RH to join Collins as VP, Executive Editor. Sally Kim, most recently Senior Editor at Shaye Areheart, will move to Harper as an Executive Editor, reporting to Publisher Jonathan Burnham.

Elsewhere, Rosemary Ahern has left Other Press and may be reached at rosemaryahern@aol.com. . . . Abrams announced that Penguin Senior Editor David Cashion will join the company as Executive Editor of Abrams Image.

Abby Hoffman, VP of Sales, Marketing and Business Development has left Chronicle to join its parent company the McEvoy Group as Director for Business Development. Current Executive Director of Sales Tyrrell Mahoney has been promoted to Hoffman’s position.

At Planned Television Arts, David Hahn has been promoted to Managing Director and EVP, taking over from Rick Frishman who steps down to serve as Senior Counsel and Publisher of Morgan James.

PROMOTIONS
More at RH: Al Greco named VP Adult Retail Sales; Tom Cox promoted to VP Mass Merchandiser and Distributor Sales; Paul Kozlowski has been promoted to the new position of VP Director Sales Marketing and Glenn Ellis succeeds him as VP Director Adult Field Sales. Christian Waters is newly named VP, Director Sales Planning.

Jane Von Mehren has been named SVP Trade Paperbacks and Modern Library. Susanna Porter has been promoted to Executive Editor at RHPG. Lisa Feuer announced Benjamin Dreyer’s promotion to Senior Managing Editor and copy chief, RHPG.

Caroline Sutton announced that Christina Duffy has been promoted to Editor at Ballantine Books. David Moench has been named Assistant Director of Publicity at Ballantine and Lisa Barnes has been named Publicity Manager. Jennifer Huwer and Karen Fink have both been promoted to Senior Publicists at RH. Chris Schluep has been promoted to Senior Editor at RH Children’s. Keith Clayton has been promoted to Editor & Licensing Manager at Del Rey. Finally, Avideh Bashirrad has been named Deputy Director of Marketing for RH.

Mary Ann McGuigan has been named Publisher of Bloomberg Press following Jared Kieling’s resignation last month. Stephen Isaacs, Executive Acquisitions Editor, succeeds her as Editorial Director.

At Abrams, Howard Reeves has been promoted to SVP, Publisher of Abrams Children’s and Amulet; Susan Van Metre has been promoted to Amulet Editorial Director; and Chad Beckerman has been promoted to Children’s Art Director.

Michael Morrison announced the promotion of Mark Tauber to SVP, Publisher of HarperOne. Prior to joining the marketing department at Harper SanFrancisco, he was a co-founder of Waterfront Media and a co-founding member of Beliefnet.com. Samantha Hagerbaumer is being promoted to Associate Director, International Sales & Marketing. Meredith Greenhouse is being promoted to Associate Director, International Sales. Jodi Harris has been promoted to Editorial Director of the HarperCollins/Festival imprint. . . . Michael Gentile has been promoted to Director, Academic Marketing. Josh Black has been promoted to Manager, Academic Marketing.

Anja Schmidt has been promoted to Executive Editor at DK and Rachel Kempster to Associate Director of Publicity.

Latest HMH merger developments: Along with Becky Saletan’s rise to Publisher of HMH, HM’s Bridget Marmion has been promoted to SVP of Marketing, and Harcourt’s Laurie Brown has been made VP of Sales for the merged division. Also, HM’s Mia Camacho becomes SVP of Finance and Operations. HM’s Betsy Groban has been made SVP and Publisher of the Children’s book group. Lori Glazer, previously HM’s VP Executive Director of Publicity, now VP, Executive Director of Publicity for HMH. HM’s Maire Gorman becomes VP, Director of Sales; Harcourt’s Executive Director of Sales Paul Von Drasek will be Director of Field Sales; HM’s John Mendelson is named Director of National Accounts; and HM’s Colleen Murphy becomes Director of Special Markets. At HMH Children’s, Harcourt VP of Sales and Marketing Jennifer Haller has been named VP, Associate Publisher for Harcourt Children’s. Linda Magram has been named VP, Director of Marketing, HMH Children’s Book Group. She was most recently VP, Director of Marketing for HM Children’s. Sanj Kharbanda has been named Director of e-marketing strategy at HMH, a newly created position.

At Holt Children’s, Christy Ottaviano has been promoted to Editorial Director of her own eponymous imprint. . . . At The Penguin Press, Jane Fleming has been promoted to Editor.. . . . At Pocket, Jennifer Heddle has been promoted to Senior Editor. . . . Brendan Duffy has been promoted to Editor at Hyperion and Sarah Landis has been promoted to Editor at the Voice imprint.

Nicholas Brealey Publishing in Boston, MA announced that Chuck Dresner has been named VP, Associate Publisher. He was formerly Director of Sales and Trade Marketing.

IPG announced that Karen Adler has joined the sales team as Educational Sales Rep. Adler currently manages IPG’s sales efforts into the education market, and was previously a buyer for Scholastic Book Fairs and Books Are Fun.
