PEOPLE

Adam Miller has been named President and CEO of Joseph-Beth Booksellers. He has been VP, Retail Strategy at Ricoh for the last year following the departure of Mark Wilson.

Mark Tauber joins Chronicle Books as Managing Director of a yet-to-be-named imprint. Launching Fall 2019, the new imprint will publish six to eight titles of narrative and inspirational nonfiction per season. He was previously SVP, Publisher at HarperOne. Elsewhere in the company, Samantha Allen joins as Subsidiary Rights Manager, having previously held that position at Simon & Schuster Children’s.

As part of Hachette Book Group’s acquisition of Worthy Publishing, Worthy CEO and Publisher Byron Williamson becomes VP, Publishing Development for Hachette Nashville. Worthy’s sales and distribution will move to HBG in early 2019.

SVP and Group Publisher David Moberg will retire at the end of HarperCollins Christian Publishing’s financial year in June 2019. His role will be filled by Brian Hampton, currently SVP and Publisher of Nelson Books.

Rob Rogley is leaving his position as Director, Interactive Media at DK. At Random House Children’s, April Ward, previously Art Director at Macmillan, has been hired as Middle Grade Art Director, while Erica Stone joins as School & Library Marketing Coordinator. Previously she was School Partnership & Offsite Sales Assistant at Greenlight Bookstore.

At Wattpad Studios, Deanna McFadden joins as Publishing Director. Most recently she was Associate Publisher at Joe Books.

At Georgetown University Press, Alfred Bertrand joins as Director. He replaces interim director Hope LeGro, who has held the position since the departure of Richard Brown in October of last year. Most recently Bertrand was Editor-in-Chief at Princeton University Press.

Jill Corcoran will leave her position as Partner and Senior Agent at Transatlantic Agency on October 1 to become Director, Published Licensing Sales at Smithsonian Enterprises.

In agency news…Leigh Eisenman joins MacKenzie Wolf as attorney and agent. She was most recently Agent and Contracts Manager for Hannigan Salky Getzler. Jennifer Grimaldi, previously Scout at Barbara Tolley & Associates, joins Chalberg & Sussman as Agent. At Martin Literary & Media Management, Britt Siess joins as Associate Literary Agent, moving over from her previous position as Sales Assistant at becker&mayer!. At Azantian Literary Agency, Masha Gunic joins as Junior Literary Agent. Previously she was Editorial Assistant at Abrams.

Kate Weiss has been named Communications Coordinator at the BINC Foundation. Most recently she was Events & Marketing Manager at Carmichael’s Bookshop in Louisville, KY.

At Atria, Michelle Herrera Mulligan joins as Senior Editor. She was the founding editor-in-chief of Cosmo For Latinas.

At Abrams Children’s, Russell Busse joins as Senior Editor, Entertainment and Licensed Publishing. Previously he was Associate Editor at Little, Brown Children’s.

Brittani Hilles and Carla Bruce-Eddings both join Algonquin and Algonquin Children’s as Senior Publicists. Most recently Hilles was Publicist at St. Martin’s and Bruce-Eddings was Associate Publicist at Riverhead.

Lauren Cepero joins Macmillan’s Page Street Publishing as Kids/YA Publicist.

 

PROMOTIONS

At Penguin Random House, James Johnston has been promoted to Global Chief Financial Officer. He officially fills the position vacated by Milena Alberti at the end of 2017. Sue Daulton is now SVP, Operations at Penguin Random House Audio, where Amy Metsch is now SVP, Associate Publisher, Editorial Director and Dan Zitt becomes SVP, Content Production. At DK, Carol Stokke has been promoted to VP, Sales; Meghan Marton, to Director, Custom Publishing; Billy Fields, Director, Publishing Operations; and Katy Miller, Coordinator, Metadata. In addition, Kristin Pozzuoli becomes Senior Marketing Manager, Education & Library, while Laura Hernandez becomes Marketing Coordinator. Bridget O’Toole has been promoted to Marketing Manager at Berkley.

Amanda R. Cecil has been promoted to Director, Digital Content & Social Media Marketing for Barnes & Noble.

At Sourcebooks, Valerie Pierce has been promoted to Director, Marketing, Retail & Creative Services. Heather Moore has been promoted to Director, Marketing for Sourcebooks Jabberwocky, where Taylor Maccoux has been promoted to Assistant Editor.

Joanna R. Demkiewicz has been promoted to Marketing Director at Milkweed Editions. Jordan Bascom also moves up to Publicist.

Laura Usselman has been promoted to Literary Agent at Stuart Krichevsky Agency.

At Abrams, Courtney Code has been promoted to Associate Editor.

At St. Martin’s, Tiffany Shelton has been promoted to Assistant Editor.

Allison Stegeland has  been promoted to Sales Associate, International Sales at Simon & Schuster. In addition, Henna Cho has been promoted to Sales Coordinator, E-Audio Sales.

Hannah Finne is now Data Manager at Holiday House.

 

DULY NOTED

Boris Kachka, longtime Contributing Editor at New York Magazine, has been named Books Editor as the company looks to triple its books coverage.

A memorial service for Judith Appelbaum, who died July 25, will be held this Saturday, September 22, from 3 to 5 pm at the Hudson Guild Elliot Center, Dan Carpenter Room. All are encouraged to bring a new or gently-used copy of a favorite book for someone else to take and enjoy. Donations in Judith’s memory may be made to United Neighborhood Houses, the Sister District Project, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

In scouting news: Edmison/Harper Literary Scouting has been appointed North American literary scout for Beijing Imaginist, while Franklin & Siegal Associates is now literary scout for Hungary’s 21. Század and Romania’s Litera.

Baker & Taylor Publisher Services has added several publishers to its roster, including Distanz, Amsterdam University Press, and KWiL Publishing, all in the US and Canada, and Jacaranda Books Arts Music in the US, Canada, and internationally, excluding Spain and Portugal. On October 1, it will also begin selling and distributing Arcler Education in the US, Canada, and internationally.

In other distribution news, Macmillan will take over North American sales and distribution for Sound True’s physical titles on May 1, 2019. Sounds True will continue self-distribution for digital audio and ebook titles. And Beacon Press has renewed its sales and distribution partnership with Penguin Random House Publisher Services.

Canongate will launch paperback crime fiction imprint Black Thorn in May 2019, building on its 2017 acquisition of Severn House, with plans to release two titles each month. Holly Domney will serve as Publishing Coordinator.

Casanovas & Lynch Literary Agency will represent Don Congdon Associates’ titles in Spain, Portugal, and Latin America, including Brazil.

Founder and publisher Holly Monteith is launching Cynren Press, a full-scale publishing company focusing on fiction and nonfiction that “illuminate a new or unique perspective on well-known historical events and offer a guide to the past, insight into the present, and lessons for the future.”

This year’s top honorees at Publishers Weekly’s annual Star Watch were Francesca Cavallo and Elena Favilli.

The 2018 finalists for the 2018 Business Book of the Year Award, presented by Financial Times and McKinsey & Company, are John Carreyou’s Bad Blood; James Crabtree’s The Billionaire Raj; Alan Greenspan and Adrian Wooldridge’s Capitalism in America; Annie Lowrey’s Give People Money; Mariana Mazzacato and Allen Lane’s The Value of Everything; and Henry Timms and Jeremy HeimansNew Power.
