Marty Lange joins Cengage as SVP and General Manager of National Geographic Learning. He was formerly President, North America, K-12 Education and Corporate L&D at 9 Lyceum.

Stephanie Koven joins Blackstone Publishing as Head of Foreign Rights. She was previously Agent at Cullen Stanley International.

At Highlights for Children, Andy Shafran has left his position as SVP, International and Global Content Licensing. He will be advising publishing and educational tech clients.

Astra Publishing House is launching an imprint dedicated to illustrated children’s books, to be led by Jill Davis. She was most recently Executive Editor at Harper Children’s.

Louise Burke and Kate Hartson have founded All Seasons Press, a new publishing company dedicated to conservative authors outside of the mainstream. Burke, Publisher, was formerly Publisher at Threshold Editions, while Harston, Editor-in-Chief, worked previously as Editorial Director for Center Street.

DJ DeSmyter, lately Senior Marketing Manager at St. Martin’s, joins William Morrow/Avon as Associate Director, Marketing. Debbie Wickwire is retiring as Senior Acquisitions Editor at Thomas Nelson after thirty-two years in the industry. She will be succeeded in that role by Senior Editor Dawn Hollomon.

At Basic Books, Angela Messina joins as Assistant Publicity Director. She was most recently Publicity Manager at Oxford University Press. On July 2, Mike Morgenfeld will step down as Cartography Director at Avalon Travel; he will be succeeded by Kat Bennett, presently Senior Cartographer and Map Editor.

In agency news…John Schline joins Writers House as Senior Agent. He has worked previously as SVP, Corporate Director of Business Affairs at Penguin Random House. Senior Agent Geri Thoma has retired after forty-two years in the business; she joined Writers House in 2013. At Dunow, Carlson & Lerner Agency, Nicki Richesin, lately Literary Agent at Wendy Sherman Associates, joins as Agent.

Celia Lee joins Simon & Schuster Children’s as Executive Editor. Most recently she was Senior Editor at Orchard Books and Cartwheel Books. Mackenzie Hickey joins Gallery Books Group as Senior Marketing Manager, returning to the company after some time at a Colorado-based clean energy company. Kayleigh Webb, lately Publicist for Avon Books/Harper Voyager, joins Saga Press as Senior Publicist and Marketer.

Sylvie Frank joins Disney-Hyperion as Executive Editor on June 21. She was previously Senior Editor at Paula Wiseman Books.

Joy Bean joins Arctis Books USA as Lead Editor. Previously she was Senior Editor at Boyds Mills & Kane and little bee books.

Judith Newlin joins as Senior Editor at McGraw-Hill Business. She had been Editor at Springer Nature.

At Penguin Random House Audio, Brady Emerson, previously Script Development Editor at hibooks, joins as Producer. Also joining as Producers are Iris McElroy, lately Producer at Harper Audio, and Nithya Rajendran, formerly of SAG-AFTRA. Lauren Klein joins as Associate Producer. LSC Communications has renamed its books division, including Dover Publications, as Lakeside Book Company.

Penn State University Press’s Graphic Mundi imprint will be distributed to the North American comics specialty market by Diamond Comic Distributors and to the North American book market by Diamond Book Distributors. Graphic Mundi launched in Spring 2021 with COVID Chronicles: A Comics Anthology.

Beginning July 1, Simon & Schuster will distribute Rocketship Entertainment worldwide.

Baker & Taylor Publisher Services will sell and distribute the SPCK Group, including Lion Hudson, IVP UP, and SPCK, in the US and Canada beginning July 1.

NYU Center for Publishing

Part time Program Support Position

The NYU Center for Publishing seeks a part-time publishing professional to help the Executive Director and program staff with various publishing and administrative duties. This appointment, which is renewed on a semester-by-semester basis, requires a 2.5 or 3 day a week commitment. The position will start mid-September, with some days in the office required.

The duties are wide-ranging and include consulting on industry trends and practices, suggesting courses and faculty, review of course syllabi, faculty classroom observations, and support of multiple industry events including writing and/or editing and copyediting invitations, programs, marketing materials and website; drafting invitations to potential speakers; creating agendas and presentations for meetings.

Candidate may be asked to teach at least one graduate level publishing course a year for additional compensation.

Skills Required:  Ideal candidate is a recent publishing industry leader with strong industry connections, who is also interested in education and working with young people. Excellent communication, organizational, writing and copyediting skills required. This position does not include benefits.
