The National Coalition Against Censorship has named Lee Rowland, currently policy director at the New York Civil Liberties Union, to replace the retiring Christopher Finan as its executive director. 

At Penguin Young Readers, VP, executive director, art & design Deborah Kaplan will retire in September. She has been at PYR for 31 years and has worked on covers for Judy Blume, S.E. Hinton, Jacqueline Woodson, Mildred Taylor, Jon Scieszka, Roald Dahl and others. At Penguin Children’s, Gerard Mancini, vice president, executive director managing editorial & production editorial will retire in December. Mancini joined the Viking Children’s editorial team in the fall of 1985. Nathan Kinney, production supervisor, will retire on September 1. Artie Bennett, executive copy editor, will retire on November 10. As a result of PRH cost-cutting measures, VP Brendan Cahill, Product Designer Maha Ahmed, and Assoc Director of Product Management Janice Young will be departing PRH Labs.

At Sourcebooks, Ian Cook has joined as senior staff accountant. Erin LaPointe has joined as buyer II. Marleen Reimer has joined as associate director, subsidiary rights.

Jessie Bowman has joined as production editor for Atheneum Children’s. She was most recently an assistant production editor at Scholastic.

Edmison/Harper Literary Scouting has been appointed North American scout for French publisher Fayard.

Margaret Rosewitz has joined Candlewick Press as reprints production controller. She was previously senior associate, content management, at Harper Collins.

Isabella Nugent has joined Page One Media as senior publicist. She was previously senior publicist at Blackstone Publishing.

Janice Yi has joined Chronicle as associate social media manager.

Alexis Lassiter has joined Little Bee as sales manager. She was previously sales manager for James Patterson Books at Hachette.

At Neem Tree Press, Alison Savage has joined as coo. She most recently worked at Gallic Books for more than 11 years as deputy managing director. Cecilia Bennett joins as senior editor. She was previously journals production editor at Edinburgh University Press. Yasmeen Doogue-Khan joins as marketing & PR executive. She was recently marketing manager at Aurora Metro Books.

Sara Zatopek has joined The Experiment as editor. Zatopek was formerly associate editor at America’s Test Kitchen.

Ali Lake has joined O’Connor Literary Agency as associate agent.

At Laura Gross Literary Agency, Amelia Brown has joined as rights director. She was previously the manager of rights and contracts at Charlesbridge Publishing.

Carey Blankenship-Kramer joins Belcastro Agency as junior literary agent.

Abrams has reorganized its marketing and publicity departments with unified groups now covering both children’s and adult imprints. Vice president of marketing Kim Lauber will now lead children’s and adult marketing. Newly reporting to Lauber are Christian Westermann, senior marketing manager;  Danielle Kolodkin, brand and partnership manager; Kristen Milford, senior marketing manager; and Zoe Michaels, senior designer. Lauren Moye is promoted to marketing coordinator, children’s books, reporting to Borana Greku. Hallie Patterson will now oversee school & library marketing in addition to leading the children’s publicity  team and has been promoted to senior Director, Children’s Publicity and School & Library Marketing. Patterson newly reports to Taryn Roeder, executive director, Abrams Publicity. Kristen Luby, associate director, school & library marketing, now reports to Patterson.

At Sourcebooks, Trent Harmon has been promoted to senior online sales manager. Kay Birkner has been promoted to associate director of training and development.

Emma Kupor has been promoted to associate editor for Harper and Harper Perennial.

At Open Road Integrated Media, Emma Chapnick has been promoted to publishing coordinator. Hannah Moseley has been promoted to manager, paid marketing.

At University of California Press, Erich van Rijn has been promoted to director of the press. Kim Robinson has been promoted to deputy director.

Shania Soler has been promoted to assistant literary agent at Metamorphosis Literary Agency.

At Columbia University Press, Caelyn Cobb, Christine Dunbar, Miranda Martin, and Stephen Wesley have been promoted to senior editor. Caitlin Hurst and Robyn Massey have been promoted to senior publicist.

Newly announced ByteDance publishing imprint has an editor. Allison Moore has started as an acquisition editor at 8th Note Press, launched recently by ByteDance (owner of TikTok). She’s acquiring romance, YA, and fantasy—including new titles and self-published titles—that appeal to the #BookTok audience. She seeks writers with a strong presence or potential in the social media space.

Actors union SAG-AFTRA says its members are permitted to continue working on audiobooks, in spite of the Hollywood strike. The union writes in a document shared with publishers, “Many of our members can and should keep working under various other contracts” with a list of approved projects, including audiobooks.

StreetLib, the cloud publishing platform that allows book publishers to distribute their catalogs internationally, and Dreamscape Media, an award-winning publisher and publishing services provider, today announced a multi-year agreement for global audio distribution. The new partnership offers book publishers and authors the opportunity to expand their reach to a global audience of listeners by distributing their ebooks and audiobooks on various retail and streaming sites such as Audible, Spotify, Apple, Nextory, Storytel, Bookbeat, and numerous others.

HarperCollins has announced that Inkyard Press, the YA imprint under the publisher’s Harlequin Trade Publishing division, will be shuttered, and its staff laid off on August 1.

Names of some employees who have accepted Penguin Random House‘s “voluntary separation offer” (VSO) are beginning to come out—even as a letter from Penguin Random House CEO Nihar Malaviya confirmed that long-rumored layoffs have become a reality.

International Bestsellers, June 2023

Every month, Publishing Trends runs fiction international bestsellers lists from four territories–France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. This month, our four regular territories are joined by two more: Hungary and India. Those books that have been published in English are listed with their official English-language title. All others are translated as literally as possible from the original. Where applicable, the US publisher is listed after the local publisher, separated by a “/”. The lists are taken from major newspapers or national retailers, which are noted at the bottom of each list.

Sasha Quinton has been named EVP and president of Scholastic’s School Reading Events, the newly formed division that combines the book fairs and book clubs businesses. 

Emily Graff has joined Simon Element/Marysue Rucci Books as executive editor. She was previously senior editor at HarperCollins.  

Onalee Duane has joined as a demand planning analyst, backlist for Simon & Schuster and Scribner. She was previously at Comcast Advertising. Megan Gendell has joined Simon & Schuster Children’s as production editor for Little Simon, Simon Spotlight, and Aladdin. Jennifer Strada has joined as senior production editor for McElderry Books.

Carlos Hernandez has joined PRH Grupo Editorial as director of sales, special markets, focusing on the Origen imprint. He previously held senior sales positions at Editorial Unilit, Grupo Nelson, and Harper Christian

At Spiegel & Grau, Jess Bonet has joined as marketing director, reporting to publishing director Nicole Dewey. She was previously at Random House and Book of the Month. Michelle Waters joins Riverhead as marketing manager. She was previously at W.W. Norton.

VP, field sales & account marketing Karen Torres will be leaving Hachette Book Group on July 14. She has been with the company in some form for more than 36 years.

SVP/executive editor Terry Karten retired after 42 years with Harper Collins. Karten began at Harper & Row in 1980. VP, creative director at Harper Children’s Barbara Fitzsimmons is retiring on June 30.

Rachael Marks has joined Chronicle Books as a senior production coordinator and Cydel Virtucio has joined as sales manager for independent specialty sales.

Jennifer Weis has launched The Weis Agency, based in New York City. Weis was a  senior agent at Ross Yoon Agency, which was recently acquired by WME,  and previously executive editor at St. Martin’s. Shannon O’Neill joins the agency as editorial director. She was previously collaborator and developmental editor at Ross Yoon. Foreign rights will be handled by Kimberly Whalen at The Whalen Agency.

Rafik Dayem has joined Sourcebooks as cyber security engineer.

Mary E. Glenn has been named chief of UN Publications, located at the UN headquarters in New York. She was previously publisher at Humanix Books. 

Christine Fisher has been elected president of the board of directors at MacDowell, succeeding Andrew M. Senchak. Fisher has been on the board since 2015.

Managing director and publisher at Atlantic Books Will Atkinson will step down later this year, after a successor is found.

Amy Hosford has joined KN Literary Arts as general manager.

At Microcosm Publishing, Anna-Lisa Sandstrum has joined to head up library sales. She was previously associate director of school & library sales & marketing at Chronicle Books. Abby Rice is joining as marketing supervisor. They were previously store manager of Title IX: A Bookstore in New London, CT. Olivia Rollins has joined as editorial supervisor.

Senior publicist Kayleigh Webb has left DAW Books.

Latoya C. Smith has returned to LCS Literary Services, where she will continue agenting as well as offering editorial and ghostwriting services. She was most recently co-founder of ArtHouse Literary Agency. Michelle Jackson has joined as an agent. She was at Olswanger Literary Agency.

Sarah Jean Grimm has joined as literary publicist at Broadside PR. She was previously at Catapult.

Chelsea Hunter has joined Holiday House, Peachtree, and Pixel+Ink as associate art director, novels and middle grade. She was previously senior designer at Abrams

Kelly Bergh has joined Lucinda Literary as an agent. Previously an editor in academia, Bergh is building her list in practical nonfiction for adults and children in the areas of health and wellness, spirituality, and popular science.

At Microcosm Publishing, Sarah Koch has been promoted to operations manager. Alex Keiper has been promoted to incoming supply chain manager (Cleveland, OH). Tyler Lane Murphy has been promoted to customer service manager.

At the Jerusalem International Book Forum, Yoel Makov has been promoted to chairman and Sharon Katz has been promoted to director, leading the fair. Hadar Makov Hassan has been named artistic director. The next event will take place from May 26-29, 2024.

Former longtime CEO of Simon & Schuster from 1975 to 1994 Richard E. Snyder, 90, died at home in Los Angeles on June 6. During his tenure at S&S, the company grew to become the largest book publisher in the world for a time.

Abrams has done another round of layoffs across departments, following a round in April. The company declined to comment on the number of people who were let go.

Penguin Random House has initiated the process of centralizing production, managing editorial, and production editorial into single company-wide departments servicing all divisions and imprints. One clear objective is efficiency, as CEO Nihar Malaviya writes: “When fully implemented, this new structure will better serve our authors by utilizing resources efficiently, exploring new technologies, and standardizing processes where it makes sense. And bringing teams together will expand professional-development opportunities for our production, managing editorial, and production editorial colleagues while scaling our established excellence and expertise in bookmaking.”

Lakeside Book Company, the largest book printer in the US, has acquired Canadian book manufacturer Marquis Book Printing. The brand will remain as a division of Lakeside and Serge Loubier will stay on as president, while the division is led by Lakeside ceo Dave McCree.

Bob Worth, founder of Worth Publishers (now part of Macmillan Learning), died at 92. He founded the company in 1966.
